Oddly, Oxford Dictionaries Online's definition is "Cannot or could not avoid.", which seems to be the opposite; other dictionaries, however, concur with our definition (restrain, abstain, etc). I suspect the dictionary actually meant to define the phrase "cannot help" (Cambridge dictionaries has a section for this phrase)
