Singapore’s national dance company, the Singapore Dance Theatre, was founded in 1988 by the late Anthony Then and Goh Soo Khim.
Located at Fort Canning Centre, it made its debut in June the same year at the Singapore Festival of The Arts (now called the Singapore Arts Festival) and has since gone on to further critical acclaim, staging numerous shows both in Singapore and on the world stage.
From a humble troupe of seven ballet dancers practising in an old studio on Killiney Road, the Singapore Dance Theatre has evolved into a well-patronised performing arts group comprising 24 dancers pre-dominantly from the Asia Pacific region.
Besides showcasing prominently at the Esplanade Theatre, the group is also responsible for the hugely-popular Ballet Under The Stars (BUTS) series of shows held at Fort Canning Park.
The Singapore Dance Theatre has also staged several full-length ballets in its history, with high profile performances such as the Nutcracker, Coppelia, Cinderella, Giselle, Madame Butterfly and Romeo and Juliet, just to name a few.
